PRESS RELEASE: HISPANIC EVANGELICAL LEADERS CONDEMN THE EUROPEAN UNION’S LABELING OF ISRAELI PRODUCTS
National Hispanic Christian Leadership and Hispanic Israel Leadership Coalition condemn the European Union’s decision to approve new discriminatory guidelines for labeling products produced from Israeli Settlements in Judea and Samaria.
Last Wednesday, the European Union’s executive approved new guidelines for labeling products from Israeli settlements which is discrimination.
The European Commission “adopted the Interpretative Notice on indication of origin of goods from the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967,” said an EU official. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, there is no doubt that the main purpose of the measure is to exert political pressure upon Israel.
The ministry warned that the guidelines “constitute an attempt to prejudge the outcome of future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Worse, they could serve as an additional incentive for the PA to eschew direct negotiations with Israel.”
Pastor Mario Bramnick, President of Hispanic Israel Leadership Coalition states “the labeling initiative is being promoted by anti-Israel organization’s and not by European consumer protection agencies and these measures are discriminatory. Israel is the only country that has been singled out by the European Union for such a policy, despite the fact that there are over 200 disputed territories worldwide.”
Reverend Samuel Rodriguez, President of National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference stated “it’s very troubling that while Israel is targeted by a wave of terrorism, the EU finds it appropriate to adopt highly political and controversial one-sided guidelines targeting Israel, the only stable democracy in the region.“
